🌳 How Tree Planting in the Gobi Desert Fights Climate Change
Most people imagine the Gobi Desert as endless sand dunes, but in truth, much of the region is made of semi-arid steppes and mountain ranges. This unique landscape in Ömnögovi Province, Mongolia, has long supported both people and wildlife — but every year, it’s getting harder to live here.
🌪️ The Harsh Reality of the Gobi
The Gobi is changing.
Droughts are becoming longer, winds are getting stronger, and desertification is spreading fast. Steppe grasses that once fed animals are drying up, and areas that used to hold moisture are turning to dust.
If this continues, the Gobi risks turning into a lifeless sand desert.
💚 A Family’s Mission to Restore Hope
That’s when our family decided to take action.
We believe one family can make a difference — especially when others join. Through the Gobi Burd Agroforestry Project, we are planting trees across vast degraded areas to fight desertification and bring life back to the land.
Our goal is to plant trees on 1,000 hectares in one soum (district) of Ömnögovi Province — and inspire others to do the same across all 15 soums.
🌧️ Can Planting Trees Really Bring Rain?
We believe it can.
Trees create shade, reduce surface heat, and help attract clouds and moisture. Over time, this can improve local rainfall patterns. When rain returns, surface water reappears, and groundwater levels rise — bringing balance back to the ecosystem.
More water means more grass, more life, and a future where both people and wildlife can thrive again.
🌱 Why Native Trees Matter — and How We Care for Them
We only plant native, drought-resistant tree species — the ones that naturally belong in the Gobi. These trees can survive harsh winds, poor soil, and long dry seasons. By planting native trees, we’re not just restoring land — we’re restoring the ecosystem that once flourished here.
But planting is just the beginning — we care for every tree.
To ensure survival, we’ve installed a drip-irrigation water system that provides each seedling with just the right amount of water in this dry region. Our team regularly monitors, maintains, and protects the planted areas from wind damage, grazing, and pests until the trees are strong enough to thrive on their own.
We do this because we believe in long-term impact — creating forests that can live for centuries, not just seasons.
👕 How You Can Help
To fund our mission, we started Gobi Greening, a brand that turns shopping into real-world impact.
Every time you buy a t-shirt, hoodie, sweatshirt, mug, bottle, tote bag, or hat, a tree is planted at the Gobi Burd Agroforestry Project.
Your purchase helps:
-
Stop desertification
-
Protect endangered Gobi wildlife
-
Support local communities
-
Create green hope for future generations
Together, we can show the world that even a desert can bloom again.
Join us in turning the Gobi green — one tree at a time. 🌳
